Kinja'd!!!

There’s a squeak coming from my upper strut mount. Inside the car it’s a chirp, but outside it’s a squeak. It doesn’t make a noise when accelerating, but does when coasting and especially when braking. If I open the hood, I can tell it’s definitely coming from the mount.  I don’t think it’s a bad shock, because I had the front replaced less than a year ago (along with the mounts) and there’s no bounce when I push down on that side and let up.

What could it be?

Would the folks who replaced it check it out for you? Most shops warranty their work for a year so theoretically they should be responsible for it anyway.

This is why non-oem top mounts are bad. What kind of car is this?

That could be it. I would have expected everything to be properly lubricated though, since I had my local indy Jag shop replace them.

Jaguar XJ8, but the mountings are OEM.

That’s a good idea. At any rate, I’ll have to bring it in, because it’s driving me out of my mind.

They don’t typically need grease

Unless it’s squeaky only over bumps or when you bounce it with the hood up and your ear or hand on it why do you think it’s the mount? Sounds like brake noise from the description

That excludes my theory then

It’s pretty much only squeaking over bumps or when I push on it. My description was a bit vague, but I think the reason it doesn’t squeak when accelerating is because the weight is shifted towards the rear, whereas it squeaks a bit when coasting and a lot when braking and the weight shifts forwards.

I don’t think it could be brake related, because I had new pads and discs put in two weeks ago and the noise was there before and after that.
